Helmet - Wilma's Rainbow EP

Released : 1994
Recorded live July 30, 1994 at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles,
Mobile recording by Westwood One.
Genre : Alternative Metal, Post Hardcore
Lenght : 24:47
Label : Interscope Records
Producer : T- Ray, Helmet

On first listen, the lead off single from Helmet's Betty album looked like the band were restraining their sound and just becoming that bit more accessible. The T-Ray production was slicker and controlled but Hamilton's staccato riffing was still there and punching above the big production, but one thing that does come to the fore is how each thundering instrument is so deliciously clear, cutting and decisive. "Wilma's Rainbow" tells only a side of the Betty album, Helmet were eclectic during this period and "Sam Hell" would be a polarising case in point. The song is harsh and discordant with an over distorted, peak breaking almost purposely Lo Fi feel, but trudges along with a banjo, slide guitar and a dark yet jokey southern vocal and odd lyric. But backing up this release is a few live cuts which make this release worthwhile. "Sinatra" sounds menacing and "FBLA" sounds more venomous in the live situation than the minimalistic studio approach of the Strap It On album while "Tic" too sounds bruising than the final Betty version while the powerhouse "Just Another Victim" and crowd pleaser "In The Meantime" round off a decent collection of live tracks to augment the pairing of "Wilma's Rainbow and "Sam Hell".

Tracks

1. Wilma's Rainbow
2. Sinatra (Live)
3. FBLA II (Live)
4. Tic (Live)
5. Just Another Victim (Live)

The Jam - Sound Affects (Deluxe Edition)

Released : 28 November 1980
Recorded : 15 June–22 October 1980
Genre : Mod revival, post-punk, Psychedelic Pop
Length : 35:18
Label : Polydor
Producer : Chris Parry, Vic Coppersmith-Heaven

Unhappy with the slicker approach of Setting Sons, the Jam got back to basics, using the direct, economic playing of All Mod Cons and "Going Underground," the simply brilliant single which preceded Sound Affects by a few months. Thematically, though, Paul Weller explored a more indirect path, leaving behind (for the most part) the story-song narratives in favor of more abstract dealings in spirituality and perception -- the approach stemming from his recent readings of Blake and Shelley (who was quoted on the sleeve), but more specifically Geoffrey Ash, whose Camelot and the Vision of Albion made a strong impression. Musically, Weller drew upon Revolver-era Beatles as a primary source (the bassline on "Start," which comes directly from "Taxman," being the most obvious occurrence), incorporating the occasional odd sound and echoed vocal, which implied psychedelia without succumbing to its excesses. From beginning to end, the songs are pure, clever, infectious pop -- probably their catchiest -- with "That's Entertainment" and the should-have-been-a-single "Man in the Corner Shop" standing out.

Sound Affects was re-issued on November 8th 2010 as a 2 CD Deluxe Edition to celebrate its 30th Anniversary.

X - Mal Deutschland – Incubus Succubus

Released : 1982
Format : Vinyl, 12" EP
Genre : New Wave, Gothic Rock
Label : Zickzack

Sounding like howling witches burning at the stake, the ghoulish shrieks of Xmal Deutschland's 1982 debut single "Incubus Succubus" immediately won the approval of goth rock connoisseurs. The German band wasn't able to maintain its black-clad sound, selling out to pop before the inevitable breakup, but Xmal Deutschland competed with Siouxsie & the Banshees for goth royalty. Xmal Deutschland was formed in Hamburg, Germany, in 1980 by Anja Huwe (vocals), Manuela Rickers (guitar), Rita Simon (bass), Fiona Sangster (keyboards), and Caro May (drums). Originally an all-girl lineup, Xmal Deutschland added a male when Simon was replaced by bassist Wolfgang Ellerbrock.

Millions Of Dead Children - Chicken Squawk EP

Released : 1984, San Francisco, CA: Secret/Rhytmic River Studios
Genre : Hardcore Punk
Label : R Radical Records
Producer : Hank Radical Smith

The A Side of this record is "Chicken Squawk," which at first listen might sound like a novelty song, but I think is actually the best vegetarian anthem ever written. MDC leave the facts and figures for the booklet and lay down a song that is funny, upbeat and catchy - a breathe of fresh air among all the other preachy, gloomy, or downright gross animal rights anthems. This song is also great because it proves that MDC weren't the uptight politicians that many nihilistic party punks accused them of being. It's understandable that many bands were negative or despairing during the Reagan years, rightly so, but it's great that MDC took a stance on vegetarianism as something to celebrate. This song was a big inspiration for me when I took the step to giving up meat. The music is pretty damn good too, pointing out that the difference between punk and bluegrass isn't really so great. The B side of this single is fairly lackluster. "Death of a Nun" has some good lyrics about South American death squads, but the band sounds like they're on autopilot.

1. Chicken Squawk
2. Kleptomaniac
3. Death of a Nun

Megadeth - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying

Released November : 1986
Recorded : 1986
Genre : Thrash metal
Length : 35:38, 55:00 (Remaster)
Label : Combat, Capitol
Producer : Dave Mustaine and Randy Burns

This album is probably the second-best Megadeth album after Rust In Peace. The album's three gems are The title track, as well as the opener, Wake Up Dead, and the roller coaster ride that is Devil's Island. Apart from those three decent supporting songs such as Good Mourning/Black Friday and The Conjuring help the albums case. The instrumental work here is definitely very close to that of Rust but the rather weak ending of the record (especially the awful I Ain't Superstitious) keep it safely in the distance as a challenger to that groundbreaking record.

Tracks

1. Wake Up Dead
2. The Conjuring
3. Peace Sells
4. Devil's Island
5. Good Mourning / Black Friday
6. Bad Omen

INXS - X

Released : 25 September 1990
Recorded : 1990
Genre : Alternative rock, pop rock
Length : 41:42
Label : Atlantic US, Mercury EU, WEA AU
Producer : Chris Thomas

The seventh album from Australia's INXS basically sticks to the formula set up on Kick, mixing solid remixable dancefloor beats with slightly quirky production tricks, Michael Hutchence's rough-edged, bluesy vocals, and some good solid song hooks. The most immediate numbers are, of course, the two singles, "Suicide Blonde" and "Disappear," but other tracks stand out as potential hit material as well, including the anthemic "The Stairs." The biggest problems with the album are a tendency to play it safe, sticking to the tried and true -- echoing a line in the thumping "Who Pays the Price," when Hutchence sings "it's all been felt before" -- and the fact that there's very little in the way of subtlety on the entire album. All of the songs are designed for immediate radio contact -- they don't really give you a chance to grow into them, they just grab you by the throat and start shaking. "Know the Difference," as an example, threatens to be sneaky but immediately switches to an obvious assault instead. In the finish, the overwhelming lack of subtlety and sense of sameness overcomes the album as a whole. It's not that's it's a bad album. It's just nowhere near as good as it could -- and should -- have been.

Tracks

1. Suicide Blonde
2. Disappear
3. The Stairs
4. Faith in Each Other
5. By My Side
6. Lately
7. Who Pays the Price
8. Know the Difference
9. Bitter Tears

Inside Out - No Spiritual Surrender

Released : 1990
Genre : Hardcore punk, metalcore
Length : 10:25 (Vinyl), 15:04 (Cassette/CD)
Label : Revelation Records

A descent...Uh...hardcore punk?..EP. It contains fine musicianship and a side of Zack De La Rocha I never thought I'd ever hear. Though De La Rocha is not that great of a singer he pays his role of a pissed off protestant making a point fine in this recording (it's kind of the rage you hear on Rage...pun intended...but with more melodic and sometimes harsh voice, instead of rapping of course). I have no idea who the bass player is here, but he's a fine bass player, he executes some particular bass lines that appear to be the driving force of the songs. Definitely the best song here is the opener "Burning Fight", it delivers a heavy punch and for a second while I was listening to it, it made me think about buying the EP. After that we have a really weak track that contains the trademark of the genre, in fact it kinda reminds me of "Necrophobic" by Slayer but in a much crappy version (I bring the comparison in terms of lenght and simplicity), I'm talking about a tune called "Undertone", it's a 1:41 seconds long stinker, but again a trademark of the genre. The last songs on the EP are all descent but fall short and just when I felt they were reaching their climax, they all ended. So check this out if you are a fan of hardcore punk, but most people who check this out will be RATM fans (me included) but don't think or feel like you are missing on something big here if you haven't heard it.

Tracks

1. Burning Fight
2. Undertone
3. By A Thread
4. No Spiritual Surrender
5. Sacrifice

Hüsker Dü – In A Free Land

Released : May 1982
Recorded : February 1982 at Blackberry Way, Minneapolis, Minnesota
Genre : Hardcore punk
Length : 2:50
Label : New Alliance Records
Producer : Steve Fjelstad and Hüsker Dü

"In A Free Land" is a song by Hüsker Dü released as a single in 1982. It was the band's second single.
This release finds the band in a period where its music was still strictly hardcore punk, but does have a hint of their future melodic style, particularly in the title track.
The songs were written by all three members, Bob Mould, Grant Hart, and Greg Norton. All three are also credited with performing on vocals.
The single's pressing was limited to 2,500 copies upon its release, along with an unknown number that contained a lyric insert.
The three tracks, in remixed form (a necessity since the original two-track master was lost by the pressing plant hired by New Alliance), appear on the Everything Falls Apart and More CD. The loss of the original two-track master to this EP may have led to a popular rumor that the stereo master to Everything Falls Apart itself had been lost. Hüsker Dü intended for the song "Love the Music, Hate the Kids" to be on the single but the publisher stated it wouldn't fit, so Hüsker Dü made it a single.
The title track was covered by the New Jersey hardcore band Ensign on their 2003 album Love the Music, Hate the Kids.
In 2009, at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in New York City, Bob Mould teamed up with members of No Age to perform the song, possibly the first time the song has been performed live since 1987.

Released : October 7, 2003
Recorded : Morrisound Studios, Tampa, Florida
Genre : Power metal
Length : 17:41

The Reckoning is a single by American heavy metal band Iced Earth, released in October 2003. It's the first official release featuring former Judas Priest singer Tim "Ripper" Owens and guitarist Ralph Santolla. In addition, the cover art of the EP is very similar to that of Iron Maiden's "The Trooper," which appears to be a form of tribute to them, as Iced Earth has sourced them as a major influence.

Released : April 19, 1999 (First Issue), January 8, 2001 (Reissue)
Genre : Power metal
Length : 23:15
Label : Century Media
Producer : Iced Earth

A decent EP. This combines three ballads with three cover tunes and a live track. The ballads are standard fare, and available elsewhere. It is the other tracks that really stand out. Covers of Bad Company's "Shooting Star", Black Sabbath's "Electric Funeral", and Judas Priest's "The Ripper" faithfully recreate the songs and proceed to show that Barlow's voice is best suited to covering classic tunes. The live track is good and unfortunately not included on the Alive in Athens disc.

Of course, this was no great success. Of course, it is very good. Not seminal or anything, just consistently good classic song-writing. And you know what? Hatebreed – Supremacy

Released : August 29, 2006
Genre : Groove Metal, Hardcore Punk, Metalcore, Sludge metal
Length : 36:23
Label : Roadrunner
Producer : Zeuss

It's nearly impossible to judge Supremacy -- or any other Hatebreed record for that matter -- outside of the monotone world that the brutal Connecticut metal quintet inhabit. All of their songs clock in at under three-and-a-half minutes, rarely deviate from one or two keys, and rely on lead singer Jamey Jasta's one-note megaphone of a voice to deliver the bullets. This insular approach to writing and recording pretty much works every time -- this is metalcore -- especially on the blistering opening track "Defeatist," "To the Threshold," and "Divine Judgment," but after four albums, even the hint of a melody line or a midtempo breakdown would break through the ether like a lighthouse in a Nor'easter.

Length : 13:22
Label : UZI Suicide
Producer : Guns N' Roses

Primitive pre-Appetite EP isn't nearly as bad as Hollywood Rose was, but aside from the band being fairly solid and the decent Aerosmith cover there's little of note on this faux-live EP, better known as the first half of the rushed 'second album' GN'R Lies. It's all pretty dumb cock rock nonsense, but not even pulled off with the finesse which the similar-minded tracks from Appetite were.

Tracks

1. Reckless Life
2. Nice Boys
3. Move To The City
4. Mama Kin
