Gang Of Four – Another Day Another Dollar

Released : January 1982
Recorded : 1981
Genre : Rock
Length : 21:06
Label : EMI/Warner Bros.
Producer : Andy Gill, Jon King

As always with these guys, lyrics are provocative and excellent, and for me at least, only "History's Bunk!" falls down a little musically, awash in a cavernous mix that may be attributable to co-producer Launer. And even there, the noisy feedback that swims around the basic tune is pretty appropriate and the lyrics carry it throughout. But "To Hell With Poverty" and "Capital (It Fails Us Now)" ride in on great riffs and then toss excellent lyrics on top (though not an afterthought as that description might imply). On the B, two live tracks smoke their studio versions, with "What We All Want" a fine beefing up of the skeletal version on Solid Gold and "Cheesburger" - the highlight of the whole set for me - taken at a rocketing tempo with the sampled vocal snippets from the album done live by the band to brilliant effect. King's manic "39 miles per gallon estimated town mileage, 54 miles per gallon estimated highway mileage!" is at once pointed and hilarious, bringing the song's message into a sharp and sardonic relief. Great, indispensable stuff.

Tracks

1. To Hell With Poverty
2. Capital (It Fails Us Now)

Recorded : 1980
Genre : Post-punk
Length : 38:43
Label : EMI Records/Warner Bros.
Producer : Jimmy Douglass, Dave Allen, Hugo Burnham, Andrew Gill, Jon King

Their great second album and their great second EP packaged together for maximum enjoyment. The least I could say about any song here is that it's very good, and that applies to two out of fifteen tracks. All the rest are better than that. Those who think that Go4 is like Wire and took a sharp turn after their debut are mistaken - they stayed the course they'd plotted for longer before starting to disintegrate and this is them at their prime. Brilliant, though sadly this package is OOP as of this writing and there's no easy way to get "Another Day/Another Dollar" at present and Solid Gold is packaged with the flaccid Hard.

The Fall - Perverted By Language

Released : December 12, 1983
Recorded : Pluto, Manchester
Genre : Post-punk
Length : 47:04
Label : Rough Trade
Producer : Steve Parker

Punk may have been the initial spark for the Fall, but by 1983 they had made it clear that whatever trend was next was not for them. Brix Smith made her debut with the band on Perverted by Language, helping to introduce the slightly more pop-friendly era of the group with another fine album. She takes lead vocals at various points throughout, notably "Hotel Bloedel," while her husband plays violin and adds extra spoken word thoughts along the way. The hints of strange beauty that the Fall can sometimes let into its world appear here more than once -- whether it's Brix's influence or not isn't clear, and why not? "Garden" still hits hard while using a softer chime at its heart, while "Hexen Definitive" is almost a country (and western) stroll. Even for all the slightly more accessible touches for a wider audience, the Fall remain the Fall. "Smile" shows the band's abilities at tense audio drama excellently, a relentless, steady build with the Steve and Paul Hanley and Karl Burns rhythm section leading the way, winding up to a total explosion that never comes. Smith's increasingly frenetic vocals match the looming dread of the track to a T. "Neighbourhood of Infinity," notable for its appearance on Palace of Swords Reversed, crops up here in a studio take, again a sequel of sorts to "The Man Whose Head Expanded." Musically it hits its own stride, another of the many motorik-tinged tunes that helped give the Fall its own particular edge ("I Feel Voxish" also fills that bill, and quite well at that). "Eat Y'Self Fitter," touching on everything from meeting heroes (maybe) to returning late rental videos, makes for a great start to things, an endlessly cycling rockabilly chug with extra keyboard oddities and sudden music-less exchanges for the chorus.

Tracks

1. Eat Y'self Fitter
2. Neighbourhood Of Infinity
3. Garden
4. Hotel Blöedel
5. Smile
6. I Feel Voxish

The Fall's late 1980's to early 1990's slid downhill pretty much begins here. Everything feels a little uninspired with a lot less attitude. It's not horrible by any means but it most definitely should not be the place to start.

"Is my cock big enough... is my brain small enough.....for you...to make me....a star..?"
The spoken word stuff is great. "The Prey" is like a weird film noir without the film....very creative. And of course the fucking songs kill..... I have been listening to this band for over twenty years and they still blow my mind; Jello et. al. did so much with what can be a bit of a one-dimensional genre - hardcore - and made incredible thought provoking savage art....simply tremendous punk rock. Alice In Chains - Alice in Chains

Recorded : April - August 1995 at Bad Animals Studio in Seattle, Washington
Genre : Alternative metal, grunge, heavy metal
Length : 64:50
Label : Columbia
Producer : Toby Wright, Alice in Chains

How do you follow up an album as legendary as Dirt? Well, there is a lot of difficulty pulling something like that off, but Alice in Chains is a very strong effort itself. It has a lot of consistency but it manages to be consistent in it's quality level as opposed to having a consistent sound. This is because this album manages to have a lot of variation, something that you may not exactly expect from an Alice in Chains album. Also, Layne Staley is very good on this album, his last album.

Alice In Chains - We Die Young

Released : July 1990
Recorded : December 1989 - April 1990 at London Bridge Studio, Seattle & Capitol Recording Studio, Hollywood
Genre : Alternative metal, grunge, heavy metal
Length : 10:08
Label : Columbia
Producer : Dave Jerden

Major league grunge grinders, Alice in Chains, blow out the walls with an all out heavy onslaught of dark, metallizied mayhem throughout the killer drug cut, "We Die Young". Pulled from the group's Facelift LP, the hard edged "We Die Young" carries the power and buzz of a Seattle sawmill. The group's 1990 three song EP is filled out with "It Ain't Like That" and "Killing Yourself". From the off, AiC was at the forefront of the Pacific Northwest angst-riden alternative scene. Let down-tuning reign!

The Exploited - Jesus Is Dead EP

Released : 1986
Recorded at the Yard Studios
Format : 12" EP
Genre : Hardcore Punk
Label : Rough Justice
Producer : Wattie

The Jesus Is Dead EP by stalwart Scottish punk rockers the Exploited is very likely the most solid release the band ever put out. Singer and frontman Wattie Buchan wrangles in yet another new crew of musicians/gang members for these four savage, thrashing tracks about politicians, imperialism, religion, drugs, and issues with law enforcement. Production-wise, this is the best the band has ever sounded: the drums are huge, the bass has girth, guitars have bite, and Wattie's vocals (legendarily indiscernible) are loud, upfront, and largely understandable. This is a good thing too because, as simple and straightforward as the songs are, there is some pretty clever songwriting in here. Fans of the band (and fans of raw, honest punk rock in general) will be pleasantly surprised to find how well Wattie and the Exploited's brand of sincere, hard-working punk stands the test of time

The Exploited – Beat The Bastards

Released : 1996
Genre : Hardcore punk, crossover thrash
Length : 51:34
Label : Rough Justice
Producer : Colin Richardson, ZM, Wattie Buchan

This is a blistering slice of hardcore from the godfather's of UK hardcore. It opens with the awesome title track "Beat the Bastards". However the rest of the album follows exactly the same formula of double bass pedal drumming and thrashing guitars and whilst it works wonderfully on the 1st track, after 12 tracks it can get a bit tiresome and you get bored. A bit more variety was needed. Not a bad effort though.

The Smiths - The Smiths

Released : 20 February 1984
Recorded : Spring – Autumn 1983
Genre : Alternative rock, indie pop
Length : 45:36
Label : Rough Trade
Producer : John Porter, The Smiths

Arriving in an era dominated by synth pop and gloomy post-punk, the Smiths' eponymous debut was the bracing beginning of a new era. On the surface, the Smiths' sound wasn't radically different from traditional British guitar pop -- Johnny Marr's ringing, layered guitars were catchy and melodic -- but it was actually an astonishing subversion of the form, turning the structure inside out. Very few of the songs followed conventional verse-chorus structure, yet they were quite melodic within their own right. Marr's inventive songwriting was made all the more original and innovative by Morrissey's crooning and lyrics. Writing about unconventional topics, from homosexuality ("Hand in Glove") to child molestation and murder, Morrissey had a distinctively ironic, witty, and literate viewpoint whose strangeness was accentuated by his off-kilter voice, which would move from a croon to a yelp in a matter of seconds. While the production of The Smiths is a little pristine, the songs are vital and alive, developing a new, unique voice within pop music. Though the Smiths continued to improve over the course of their career, their debut remains startling and exciting.

The Primitives – Lovely

Released : 1988
Genre : Indie pop
Length : 35:25
Label : RCA
Producer : Paul Sampson, Mark Wallis, Craig Leon

The Primitives' sound pretty much defines the lighter side of British pop in the late '80s: straight-ahead pop melodies, tinged with a bit of Manchester danceability and shoegazer experimentation. Some of the Primitives' more "pop" songs are a bit too straightforward and bland, but the majority of Lovely is well-written enough to make up for the occasional lapse into plainness. The album is at its best when the band departs from its pop sound -- the Jesus and Mary Chain-inspired noise of "Spacehead" and "Stop Killing Me," or the Eastern-sounding "Shadow," with its sitar and backwards vocals, stand out as some of the more artistically worthwhile tracks. The Primitives, however, are more about writing hooky pop songs than making great artistic strides; Lovely's most memorable tracks are built around P.J. Court's simple, jangly guitar lines and Tracey's sweet, melodic vocals. If one can look past the fact that their brand of Brit-pop sounds a bit dated, the Primitives are a consistently exciting listen.

Government Issue - Boycott Stabb EP

Released : 1983
Date Recorded : Oct. 1, 1982 - Jan. 1983
Genre : Hardcore Punk
Label : Fountain of Youth Records / Dischord Records

Way good DC hardcore with severe rock leanings, but no 'metal' trappings at all, right around the time when this kind of music was 'progressing', and these guys were among the first to start pushing the boundaries of what was 'HC'. Vocalist John Stabb was/is one of the best punk rock singers of all time, injecting a passion into the words and delivery that was/is very rare for the form. Every single song on here is incredibly catchy, and heavy, too with a ripping burly guitar tone. In their day, these guys were kind of underrated, but now, with reissues of these records and a general upsurge in interest of this type of music, maybe they will be permanently recognised as the true pioneers that they were. GI were one of the only HC bands that actually got better as they matured, getting more proficient but not losing any of the momentum they has at the get go. An outstanding record.

Care - Flaming Sword

Released : 1983
Genre : New Wave
Format : 7"
Label : Arista

Classic, timeless song. Flaming Sword is one of those unforgettable singles from the early Eighties that could only have come out of England. Cheerful and passionate, it stands alone above any other fine single from that era.
Misericorde is merely a slow piano version of Flaming Sword, and the importance of its inclusion is questionable. "On the White Cloud" is another brief instrumental; a better and fuller version (with vocals) of which was later released on the Diamonds & Emeralds compilation cd.

Sex Pistols - Filthy Lucre Live

Released : 29 July 1996
Recorded : Finsbury Park, London on 23 June 1996
Genre : Punk rock
Length : 53:00
Label : Virgin (UK & Japan) / Toshiba EMI (USA)
Producer : Chris Thomas

As the cliche says, the Sex Pistols were the last band anyone expected to see reunite. However, those observers were ignoring just how alluring the promise of easy money is to a band that never earned that much in the first place, so the Sex Pistols did what was previously unthinkable and reunited in 1996 for a summer-long tour of Europe and the United States. After playing two warm-up gigs, the band played their first official live concert at Finsbury Park in early June and the result is presented on Filty Lucre Live, which was released just a matter of weeks after the concert. Two things about the reunited Pistols are clear from the outset -- they can play their instruments and they sound much heavier and less revolutionary than expected. In fact, the band doesn't sound very punk at all -- they sound like a professional hard rock band. But -- and this is the most surprising thing -- they sound fun. If you're a fan, it's hard to deny that it's fun to hear a live performance by the Pistols that doesn't degenerate into chaos and is recorded in clean audio. You can't call Filthy Lucre Live

Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks

Released : 27 October 1977 (UK), 10 November 1977 (US)
Recorded : October 1976, March–June 1977,
August 1977 at Wessex Sound Studios, London, England
Genre : Punk rock
Length : 38:45
Label : Virgin (UK)
Warner Bros. (US)
Producer : Chris Thomas, Bill Price

Could this be the album that embodies the entire spirit and pure essence of Punk Rock? The Ramones were the dudes that launched punk into the stratosphere, but they only introduced the aesthetic of Punk, short songs with high amounts of energy, with minimalist music. And let's face it, they were harmless bubblegum pop at heart, four leather jacketed dudes who wanted to have fun. The Clash were too experimental, and when they played it straight they never brought anything new to the table. But this? Holy crap, this IS Punk Rock. I know people fucking ravage and rip this band to shreds for being false and everything wrong with Punk, but dammit how can this be anything but punk? The attitude knob is cranked up to 110% as Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) snarls, yells, and sounds like the most fucking obnoxious little snot you've ever heard in your entire life, in the most positive way that can be interpreted. Every word he says is criticism at something, dude fucking supports anarchy for goddsakes. The production is just as messy and sloppy as Lydon is, and musically it works! Everything about it screams PUNK both in image and at heart (maybe not Sid Vicious, but that doesn't really matter, Lydon is where its at). It's extremely passionate at what its trying to get across, it's tireless and raging, never letting up once. The thing that turns people off is the fact that it seems like The Sex Pistols are 'manufactured'? Bullshit, Lydon was utterly in love in music and what he did, and with his charming personality went on to create Public Image Ltd after this, you're thinking of Sid Vicious who didn't even know what a bass guitar was (even then he's gained a little sob story of his own afterwards). This is pure punk. Made by punks, aimed at even more punks. No experimental crap that's not punk, no happy bubblegum that's not punk, no dark artsy stuff that's not punk, and screw that new wave shit, so Never Mind the Bollocks, I'm going to yell about the economy and jam endlessly. And I won't have it any other fucking way. Viva la punk!

Not much to say here. Skeptical of The Clash and don't want to start off with a proper album? Start here, a healthy selection of great tracks from all of their albums excluding the horrendous Cut the Crap, quality singles, B-Sides and a rarity or two as well. Doesn't get much better to be honest.

Released : 11 May 1979
Recorded : Highbury New Park N.5, London, England, 1979
Genre : Punk rock
Length : 13:01
Label : CBS
Producer : Bill Price, The Clash

4 Clash classics! After releasing the somewhat disappointing (but still good!) Give 'Em Enough Rope, The Clash released a masterful EP. Including a cover of "I Fought the Law", a folk rock number "Groovy Times", the Mick Jones penned "Gates of the West", and a re-working of an earlier track "Capital Radio". This EP proved that The Clash weren't slowing down, They were merely shifting gears.

Fantastic album. Part of what makes it so great, apart for the songs of course, is how the folk roots, arena rock, pop songs and country music flows so organically together. : )

Not nearly as consistent in its brilliance as This is the Sea, A Pagan Place nevertheless boasts some very fine moments. The inclusion of "Red Army Blues", possibly Mike Scott's pinnacle of musical/poetic expression, alone would make this essential.

Red Rockers - Good As Gold / Schizophrenic Circus

Released : Jan. 31, 1995
Genre : New Wave
Label : Oglio Records

The Red Rockers were not convincing as punks; however, as blatant U2 disciples they were quite special. Good as Gold/Schizophrenic Circus combines the Red Rockers' last two albums. Released in 1995 when '80s new wave nostalgia started to blossom, it works as a generous career retrospective, skipping the band's youthful missteps and leaving only the good stuff. The propulsive "China," with its faux-English accents, shimmering riffs, and hyper drums, should've been a big Top 40 hit instead of the alternative-radio cult classic it became. Blame it on commercial radio at the time, too tightly programmed to hear one of the decade's catchiest pop songs. For some, the Red Rockers' story probably ends there, defined by a perfectly rendered, jangling jewel that glitters but then fades with the group's hopes of breaking through the mainstream. Although the rest of the Red Rockers' discography barely resembles "China," they recorded more than a handful of toe-tapping, politically driven tracks such as "Home Is Where the Heart Is" and "Blood From a Stone." Like 415 Records comrades Wire Train and Translator, the Red Rockers sounded British, especially on "China," "Just Like You," and "Good Thing I Know Her." However, the Byrds were an obvious influence, too, as chiming, ringing guitars give a few of these songs a '60s feel, although the slick production, especially on the Schizophrenic Circus material, is totally '80s. Some of the tracks blend into one another, but the albums are surprisingly filler-free. The Red Rockers were not as innovative as their idols U2 and the Clash; nevertheless, they were capable of writing music that was just as memorable.

999 - 13th Floor Madness

Released : 1983
Recorded : "The Point" Studios, Belgravia, London, except tracks 4 and 10 recorded at Greenhouse Studios, London.
Genre : Punk Rock
Label : Albion
Producer : Alan O'Duffy

With four powerful punk-pop albums to their credit, 999 decided to go in a different direction with their fifth release, alienating many of their fans and critics in the process. Adding more varied rhythms and slowing everything down to nearly a crawl, the boys don't fall flat on their face, but their experiments are not entirely successful either. "Use Your Imagination" seems the closest thing to a classic 999 track, albeit a lot lighter than usual. "Lookin' Like You Do" has a reggae beat and a nice hook, but seems a bit empty. Other tracks follow the same path, taking in a bit of light soul/funk ("It's What You've Got," "13th Floor Madness"), '80s pop ("Good to See You," "Don't Want You Back") and exotic ska ("Arabesque"). Instead of the songs being based around the same 999 formula of old, there's a definite groove-based style of songwriting this time around, which doesn't quite translate to vinyl although bootleg live recordings of these songs show that the band added the necessary extra meat in a live setting. Though not a terrible album, 999 lost a lot of momentum with this release and it took a few years for them to recover.

Length : 35:30
Label : United Artists
Producer : Andy Arthurs

999 were a great band, although this their debut album was not their best. I did not see them live in their early days, but playing live broke the band in the heady punk days of 1976 - 1978.
They were not up there with the best of their generation, but nevertheless there are some great songs on this release which to this day still sounds good and relevant.

7 Seconds- Ourselves

Released : 1988
Genre : Punk rock, hardcore
Label : Restless
Producer : John Baccigaluppi

Ourselves is a highly underrated album, which is evident as this is the first review for this album. The band take an odd turn on this album, with a more technical feel. The riffs on this album are fantastic and there are some great catchy songs. They have dropped their Hardcore Punk sound completely with this album which is probably why no one remembers it. I urge everyone who doesn't mind a band changing their sound to listen to this album, it's a great listen.

7 seconds - Committed For Life

Released : 1983
Recorded at NOBS Sounds, Reno
Genre : Hardcore Punk, Punk Rock
Label : Squirtdown Records
Producer : Jim D. & Kevin Seconds

Committed for Life EP is the best by far. They waste no time with "5 Years of Lies," no intro or anything, just straight into fast hardcore that is decidedly lo-fi, and Kevin's vocals are not yet as sappy as they would be in later years. "Drug Control" and "Bottomless Pit" are ok, wish I couldn't make out the lyrics, though, but then you run into two absolute classics of the genre: "Fight Your Own Fight" and the title track. Honestly I would stack these two songs against any other two songs from all of US hardcore in the 80's. "This is the Angry" is your basic whoa-whoa 7 SECONDS song, and "Aggro" sounds like it could have been on The Crew. All the songs on this are good, but the first song, and the two powerhouses in the middle, really ought to be heard.

Tracks

1. 5 Years of Lies
2. Drug Control
3. Bottomless Pit
4. Fight Your Own Fight
5. Committed for Life
6. This is the Angry
